LUXList Designer Edition | David Phoenix

David Phoenix has a wide roster of clients to his name, both US-based and internationally. His style is one of layered sophistication – classic, elegant, yet never outdated. His work has been featured in multiple reputable design magazines including Architectural Digest, Traditional Home and LUXE magazine. His ability to create spaces which are elegant as well as warmly hospitable and easily navigable is what keeps his work in demand. When asked what fictional character he’d design for if he could, David chose James Bond stating “he’s into detail… Risky at times, but always classic and cutting edge.” This description could work just as well as a reflection of David’s design style. Always classic, but with just enough edge to keep things interesting. Discover more about our LUXList Designer’s inspiration and aesthetic! See his favorite pieces from RubyLUX.com.

Describe your design aesthetic in a few words?

Sophisticated casual elegance, quality-made, comfortable and classic.

What do you love about using antiques in your designs?

Antiques are one-of-kind pieces that bring personality to a room. They tend to be pieces that make a person stop and look for a little while, think about it’s history, age, maybe a previous owner…they definitely add a differentiating layer to a room.

What inspires you?

I believe inspiration can be found anywhere as long as you’re open to it. My clients play a huge role in the inspiration behind my work. Attempting to get into their minds when discussing their needs and wants lets me in on complete new worlds.

Of course, I’m always inspired by architecture and travel. The European country-side, London’s Portobello Market, and the Paris Flea Market are my go to’s for shopping and design inspiration when I travel.

What is a favorite piece in your home?

Very hard to select just one! I’ll have to go with a beautiful Portuguese antique table that I’ve carted around forever and a lamp that has been in my family for generations, exclusively passed on to me by my great-grandmother.

What are some details of your signature style?

I study the way people sit and interact with one another. I cannot stand furniture layouts that force people to move the pieces around in order to converse. I absolutely love a layered look in any room. I do this often with tone on tone fabrics and texture. I am all about comfortable upholstery and exceptional detailing. I love incorporating subtle trim details, beautiful wall finishes, etc. and the use of quality millwork which is always timeless.

What can you never have enough of?

A happy ending with a happy client!

If you could design for a fictional character who would it be? Why?

Definitely James Bond – I think that he is into detail and gadgets..he’s inquisitive and mysterious, risky at times, but always classic and cutting edge.
