Fine Period Louis XV Grey Painted Canapé-This fine sofa made in France circa 1750 is from the period of the reign of Louis XV. The carved beech wood frame is decorated with flowers and extensively modeled rails. The piece is curved at the back ( see image 10) and has a separate seat cushion while the whole is raised on 8 conforming legs and small padded arm rests. The canape is constructed in the time honored method of pegs and dowels which can be seem in images 8 & 9..note the shrinkage apparent throughout indicating age. The piece has a nice old beige grey paint with great patina and wear but may have started life unpainted. With a relatively new upholstered surface in expensive woven and cut velvet and a contrasting back panel. The down filled cushion and upholstery is in good condition and can be used right away if desired . The sofa is large,actually comfortable and sturdy. With a fine provenance this is an exceptional period piece suitable for daily use.
