English Regency Period Mahogany Coaching Table-This table intended as a folding coaching table was made circa 1825 in England during the late Regency period. Designed to fold and be stored away the table was used during travel periods for a stable flat surface away from home. Made of fine grained mahogany (please note the photos of the grain and color of the top boards cut from a single matching slab ) the table retains is original patina and color with a deeply waxed surface rich in luster and depth. This piece is an excellent example of the craftsman's hand-turned towards specific needs adapted to mechanical purposes. Note the inset folding hinges (figure 4) and the clever use of design to increase surface size while being able to reduce down to as thin and small a closed space as possible. The turned decorative spindles used as spacers within the shaped folding legs are crisp and well proportioned. These forms are used today as bar tables, serving tables, small consoles or end tables.
