Luxury Design, Past & Present
This antique painting shows a large group of sheep grazing among trees beside a lake. Signed (bottom right): Charles W. Bartlett 1897.
Following the untimely death of his first wife Bartlett traveled to Brittany and Holland to sketch scenes of rural life before he returned to England in 1898. In 1897, the same year he painted this image, he was invited to join the prestigious Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Bartlett was a British painter and printmaker. He traveled the world extensively and eventually settled in Hawaii in 1917. His work is in many public collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
