In the late 1920s the Werkstatte Hagenauer increased their range of objects gradually by niche products. The Werstatte Hagenauer aimed to provide all sorts of everyday life goods as possible. These two bookends were made around 1928 and are a good example for this development. The design of this model can be attributed to Karl Hagenauer due to the combination of symbolistic and strongly reduced ornamentic style elements. Karl Hagenauer was a pupil of Josef Hoffmann and temporary worked for the Wiener Werkstätte. The resemblance to the designs of Vally Wieselthier and Gudrun Baudisch can easily be seen in this model, Karl Hagenauer was most likely influenced by two of the best female designers of the Wiener Werkstatte during his time of work for Hoffmann.

These two bookends stand as a representative example for the transition of the ornamentic Jugendstil to the early austrian design of the late 20s. The excellent work of the eployees of the Werkstatte Hagenauer shows itself especially at the perfectly beaten brass and the lovely depiction of the female faces.
