Franz von Zülow was a very versatile artist. In the beginning, he printed many of his almost naïve imageries. During his work he designed several decorations for ceramics and porcelain and in the 1920s he began working with oil colors.
This work is from 1954 and was applied in a paste technique on paper. In the implied current a wide variety of fish can be seen. It seems like there are some distinguishable fish in the water, like a goldfish and a carp, but all of those animals come straight from Zülow’s rich imagination. The gold, yellow and brown hues harmonize extremely well with the aqua blue and green shades of the water.
The artist uses the tip of the brush cunningly to paint scales, fins and shapes into the paste color. Some effects were achieved by simply scratching away applied paint and revealing the foundation beneath. This generates a sense of depth in the two dimensional medium.
The fresh and decorative work of Franz von Zülow is signed and dated at the lower right.
