"It's about enriching the world with fantasy" says Christian Ludwig Attersee, born in 1940, in an interview on his solo exhibition at Belvedere 21 in Vienna. And in this painting dating from the year 1991, the artist's lack of imagination cannot be denied.

Attersee is one of Austria's most important and established painters. His participation in the renowned Documenta Kassel in 1977 and the Biennale di Venezia in 1984 marked his international breakthrough. From 1990 to 2009, Attersee also held a chair in painting at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

In the absurd scenery of the "egg acrobats", a tomcat and a woman upside down juggle several eggs simultaneously like jongleurs. The black tomcat balances on the acrobat's back, serving her egg balls like in an exotic circus act. In this strange game the two dissimilar artists fly through time and space and the diffuse pastel background emphasizes the surrealistic keynote of the scene.

This fantastic composition shows Attersee's impulsive way of painting and perfectly exemplifies his penchant for surrealist humour, of course always paired with a powerful dash of eroticism.
