The Hoffmann student and employee of the Wiener Werkstätte Karl Hagenauer was one of the leading designers of Viennese design. Josef Hoffmann commissioned the talented Karl Hagenauer with designs for the Wiener Werkstätte until the late 1920s. From around 1930 onwards, all his attention was devoted to the Werkstatte Hagenauer, which was founded by his father.

Karl Hagenauer took over the management of the Werkstatte Hagenauer in the 1920s. Under his leadership, the assortment of the blacksmiths changed and adapted to the taste of the customers of the period.

Strongly reduced depictions of animals and puristic female nudes were characteristic motifs of Karl Hagenauer. This design combines these two attributes into an elegant brass sculpture. The curved forms and the elevation of the front legs make the horse appear dynamic and graceful. The casual posture of the rider together with the rearing horse conveys a pleasant feeling of lightness.
