Luxury Design, Past & Present
The trophy-shaped horse heads are in keeping with the figures of those popular animal depictions which the Hagenauer workshop produced in brass, bronze or wood from the 1940s onwards.
The slanted, powerful neck and the finely carved head perfectly express the grace of these noble animals. Reduced to their essential features, the sculptures embody the stylized formal language of the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien in an emblematic way. For example, the abandonment of the decorative mane of the horses reinforces the dynamic effect of the sculptures. At the same time, the high-quality materials and their perfect craftsmanship are shown to their full advantage.
The majestic horse's heads are documented in the sales catalogue from 1957 and are a fine example of the masterly workmanship of wood and metal in the two Werkstätten Hagenauer, in Vienna and Fuschl.
