Starting in the 1930s the Werkstätte Hagenauer produced objects with African backgrounds. Following the trend of the time, Hagenauer began to sell negrid sculptures and African animals. In the 50s those objects experienced a revival. For the first time male African sculptures were displayed and the product range of animals was expanded. This beautiful giraffe family was most likely executed during this time in the 1950s. It shows specific style elements of the Werkstätte Hagenauer in its dynamic pose and reduced shape and also in the fine execution by Hagenauer’ s craftsmen. Examples of these animal depictions can be found in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and every major private collection. This figure group is an eyecatcher in every Art Deco collection and is a typical example of the work of the Werkstätte Hagenauer in the 1950s.
