Female depictions played a crucial role in the oeuvre of both Hagenauer-brothers since the very beginning of their careers. Throughout the years they created an incredible variety of sculptures, whose main motif were the female body and soul. The range of these works varied from big to small, from erotic nudes to athletic poses and sophisticated character depictions. An important source of inspiration was the expressive dance and especially Josephine Baker, whom the Werkstätte Hagenauer dedicated a bespoke sculpture.
This sculpture of a standing nude dates from the early period of the Werkstatte Hagenauer and is characterized by a unique elegance. The raised arm and the curved back of the lady give her an exceptionally dynamic, but also delicate appearance as if it was a snapshot of a dancer. With her curved forms and sensual expression, she enchants the observer.
