Dragons and dinosaurs were a central theme of the Amphora company at the world exhibition in Paris in 1900. Today, they are among the most sought-after and expensive products of this manufacture. Eduard Stellmacher, one of the directors of Amphora Werke, designed this vase in the period around 1900. Inspired by drawings from contemporary magazines and Japanese woodcuts from the 19th century, a whole series of vases with dragons and dinosaurs was produced. Grotesque ceramics, such as the products of the Martin Brothers from the USA or the Amphora manufactory, met the taste of the customers at that time and are today more popular among collectors than ever before.
This vase, with its motif of the hunting dinosaur and its amphibious prey, is one of Amphora's most impressive works of art. The condition is exceptionally good, we could not find any damages or restorations. This is a real rarity for ceramic art objects, especially in this monumental size and period. The very delicate iridescence and the earthy colouring make this art object a real rarity.
