The cobalt-blue “Lava” vase impresses with its size: Its measurements are almost 30cm in height and 15cm in width. This decoration variant, also called Phenomen Gre 377, was first presented by Loetz at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. Loetz made use of it in many different forms in the coming two years. The cobalt ground was used for the designs of the Paris World Exhibition.

With this décor the glass factory Loetz reused and improved an old technique in glassmaking to create an iridescent and cracked surface. The still hot glass vessel was chilled in ice cold water and the resulting cracks were melted together again. The “Lava”décor became a very fancied and successful decoration variant for Johann Loetz Witwe.
