Luxury Design, Past & Present
Austrian Jugendstil sitting room suite wood leather by Josef Hoffmann circa 1906 manufactured by J&J Kohn
Josef Hoffmann designed this sitting room suite in 1906. In the same year the company Jacob & Josef Kohn started its production with the model number 421. The furniture suite appeared for the first time in a Kohn catalogue in January 1907. This sober, elegant suite can boast a notable exhibtion career. Hoffmann placed the entire living room set 421 in the interior design of an ideal chalet at the Kunstschau in 1908 in Vienna. Two years later, the same furniture was displayed at the "Internationel Exhibition" in Buenos Aires in 1910.
The bench and armchairs were produced in bent beechwood, stained and polished. The horseshoe-shaped form with its massive back provides this furniture with quite a formal character. Nevertheless, lateral openings and curved armrests ease the form and certainly contribute to an all-over harmonic appearance.
