Cobalt Blue Vase "Decorated Art Glass" by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios, New York, USA, 1900
The company Louis Comfort Tiffany was one of the most important and famous art manufactures in America around the turn of the century. Next to the famous lamps and leaded glass mosaic windows, vases were among the most important objects produced by Tiffany.
This piece was executed in 1900. It is marked “LCT” and bears the production number “M 6650”. It is a so called “decorated art glass” vessel. These pieces are among the most exclusive objects that the Tiffany Studios ever made. A broad silver oxide thread was weaved over the hot glass mass and through a complicated technique the decoration was applied onto the surface.
The undulating, strongly iridescent decoration stands out on the cobalt blue background, thus emphasising the vase's curved shape.
