Luxury Design, Past & Present
St. Lukas Utrecht. Art Nouveau earthenware vase (ca. 1910) with handpainted underwater scene below gold luster glaze. Signed on the bottom.
St. Lukas pottery factory in Utrecht was founded in 1909 by A. Enthoven and G.J.D. Offermans. The factory was known for the use of a beautiful luster glaze. This is a complicated and costly technique where fine gold powder is used to cause the metallic luster. The vases, bowls and other items had handpainted decorations with flora and fauna below an irresistible pearl-like shining luster glaze following Japanese tradition.
