Luxury Design, Past & Present
Symbolist sculpture 'Meditation' made of glazed white clay, designed by Cris Agterberg, conducted by Roger Guérin.
Cris Agterberg (1883-1948) was a Dutch designer and maker of applied arts as well as a sculptor and painter. Cris Agterberg designed for Glasfabriek Leerdam and Pottery factory Schoonhoven. Although he was famous for his decorative designs, he thought of himself as a sculptor in the first place. A few years after Agterberg had established himself as an autonomous decorative artist, he made a name for himself in the early 1920's with small human sculptures which had symbolist names like: The Model, The Dance and Meditation.
While objects from Agterberg’s studio were mostly produced in limited editions (for example Meditation), the details show that each piece was handmade. During the interwar period Agterberg’s studio managed to flourish and became one of the leading craftsmen in applied arts despite the deteriorating economic conditions. The versatile body of work by Agterberg was highly appreciated at the time. Because of his craftsmanship it still is appreciated today and can be found in many public- and private collections.
The piece is in excellent condition. Minor chip on the foot (under the glaze).
