Luxury Design, Past & Present
Lovely glazed pottery Art Nouveau figure of a naked boy, holding a rope in his hands and looking at a frog (1905). This marvellous symbolistic sculpture was designed by Toon Dupuis for Haga, which was one of the most prominent manufacturers of Purmerend at the beginning of the 20th century.
Both Dutch and international famous artists designed sculptures and vases for this company. Artistically these products were a huge succes. Commercially Haga was less succesful: only a couple of years later the factory went bankrupt. This is why the factory's sculptures are rather rare.
Antonius Stanislaus Nicolaas Ludovicus Dupuis (1877 – 1937) was a sculptor and medal designer with Belgian descent. He was a teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.
