Luxury Design, Past & Present
For this one-off piece cabinet Alexander van Straten was inspired by two remaining doors that originate from sideboard ‘Opus 14’, made by the world famous architect J.P. Berlage between 1900 and 1902. He combined this with his own practical solutions as well as a sharp creative vision.
The doors are stamped-signed by H.P. Berlage, by the famous sculptor M.J. Hack (who made the ornamentation) and by the manufacturer 't Binnenhuis. A complete piece was on show at The Gemeente Museum in The Hague in 2011.
Alexander Van Straten (Netherlands, 1963) is an architect and independent artist-designer. Fine proportions, essential materials and lasting craftsmanship are the qualities that give that ‘soul’ to his designs.
