Luxury Design, Past & Present
Wooden letter opener in the shape of an animal figure by Willem Raedecker, who hand-carved animal figures in such a way that they appear to be cut out of the wood in one smooth and fluid movement.
Wilhelm Anton (Willem) Raedecker (1883 - 1971) was a Dutch sculptor and designer of furniture, applied arts and pottery. Most of his work is made in Amsterdam School style, a particular type of rather expressive Dutch Art Deco. His work can be found in private and public collections such as the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, where a similar letter opener is currently on display.
Fair vintage condition consistent with age and use. The cutting edges are a bit 'frayed' (see images).
