Cellarets, or wine coolers, of this design are of complexity that only the most accomplished cabinet makers could have produced them, and the firm of Gillows is known to have produced similar examples. Of particular distinction with this piece is the star burst fluted top centered by a raised pineapple-pattern decoration. Lacking its zinc lining, the interior has been later painted a deep gray. The brass lion's mask handles and lion's paw feet are of considerable quality.

Provenance: Henry Phipps family, Old Westbury, New York.

Henry Phipps was a partner of Andrew Carnegie in Carnegie Steel Company and later established the Bessemer Trust Company.
