An exceptional Dutch mahogany 18th century bookcase with grisaille painted panels and raised gilded decoration. The heavily carved swan neck pediment is centered by a domed oval grisaille painted medallion depicting a classical robed female figure before a flaming altar. Flanking the pediment are two ebonized turned vases. The plain frieze set with a continuous panel of raised gilded neoclassical ornament on a black lacquer ground. Below are two glazed doors centered by painted ovals decorated with raised gilded ornament from which issue four diagonally set connecting glazing bars. The outer broad frames have canted sides with neoclassical raised gilded ornament on a black lacquer ground centered by an exotic bird. Below the shelf is a continued frieze with raised gilded ornament centered by a lion mask motif. Two blind cupboard doors below are centered by carved molded recessed panels with broad outer frame. The whole set on a plain plinth. Probably Amsterdam, circa 1790.
