Luxury Design, Past & Present
Pair Art Deco Black and Gold Lamps, Italy circa 1930. The sheer boldness of the shape of these lamps is quite powerful and gives them a sculptural presence. In addition the contrast between the sheen of the black and gold finish is accentuated by the unique mottled treatment of the glazed surface. Each lamp has a simple urn form that is amplified by the extravagantly shaped handles on each side that make reference to the antique classical form of the "volute" originally seen on an Ionic capital. An updated use of ancient classical motifs and forms was an attribute of the Art Deco period in architecture, furnishings and artwork. Each lamp has been wired for American electricity with a three way socket for a standard base bulb and topped with a clean line linen drum shade that focuses attention on the lamp. The base of each lamp is 7" in diameter.
