The handsome mahogany timber used in this English antique sideboard buffet circa 1850 is positively lustrous. The striking movement of the mahogany grain is combined with carved details to accentuate the profile and add decorative power to the overall appearance. The wide top is perfect for serving and display and showcases the gorgeous mahogany. As the top section stands on the two pedestal bases it contains three drawers distinguished by powerful grain patterns and ribbon form moulding. All three drawers are opened by pulling gently on the underside as the designer of this unique mahogany sideboard chose not to use any visible hardware pulls or knobs that would distract from the mahogany. The pair of pedestal bases stand upon plinth bases giving the English buffet sideboard an architectural presence and visual grounding when seen in an interior. Each pedestal features a rectangular panel enclosed with a bold raised ribbon shaped moulding chosen to frame the flame grain of the mahogany timber as well as a pair of corbels placed at the upper left and right of each door. Again there is no visible hardware to open these doors. Instead there is a key and lock accessible from the open space between the pedestals and they are deliberately discreet in order to focus attention on the piece itself. When opened, this antique sideboard buffet reveals sliding drawers on the left and a large drawer on the right which was originally used as a cellarette (bottles of wine and port placed inside to be used during dinner). Now this piece may be incorporated into many different rooms as it offers storage and display in a one handsome package.
