Luxury Design, Past & Present
The clean powerful lines of this antique German walnut table circa 1825 possess a modern feel quite at home in today's contemporary spaces. Designed and constructed using the finest timbers in the early 19th century this antique Biedermeier period walnut table showcases stunning walnut with a potent pattern. All of the veneers used in this Biedermeier table were hand selected for their matching quality and ability to enhance the circular shape of the table. The top, edge, apron and base of the table all exhibit the masterful placement of the walnut grain. Especially the top with its arrangement of pie wedge sections of walnut that surround the central medallion of brilliantly patterned burl walnut. The apron of this antique walnut table has a surprise, a concealed drawer that must be opened and closed by pulling on the underside of the drawer. Always intended to be seen from every direction in an interior the balance and symmetrical arrangement of both the walnut as well as the three column legs and the flared three part base is exceptional. Connecting the top to the base are three ebonized wood columns each with a particular characteristic. The shape of each column is more slender at the top and base than in the middle and this subtle shape change is called "entasis". An architectural term first used to describe columns seen in the ancient ruins of Greece and Rome, entasis was employed by the best architects and designers to ensure an elegant line to columns as a straight edge was considered clunky and ungraceful. The capital and base of each column of this antique German table are highlighted with gold leaf for a subtle reflection of light against the midnight black colour of the columns. The base of the table demonstrates the originality of the Biedermeier period as each of the three sides of the base each have a curved "S" form shape. Notice how the end of each side wraps gently around the base of each column in a particularly tender manner, almost a gentle caress to make this antique Biedermeier period table a truly outstanding piece.
