Luxury Design, Past & Present
An Adam style antique English mahogany presentation/serving table circa 1860. Please notice the elegant proportions of this table that stands upon six tapered legs that each terminate in a spade foot. The top surface showcases mahogany with an extraordinarily vivid grain to the timber along with a perimetre crossbanded with mahogany that extends not only across the front and sides but also along the back edge of the top. This is an extremely unusual detail as it demanded a room where there was enough light to illuminate the top from front to back. Only well to do households could afford this expense. The front of the frieze features a reeded detail that frames an urn in the centre and oval medallions on the left and right. The wonderful surprise about this frieze is that it conceals three drawers that each open to reveal full storage. The beauty of the timber along with the elegant scale and proportion of this table determined its placement in a large home that had the space to accommodate a piece that was used primarily for the display of precious objects. This unique table has a surprisingly contemporary feel and will add richness to either a modern or transitional interior.
