Luxury Design, Past & Present
This triangular shaped sculptural depiction of various instruments arranged to showcase their individual nature is striking in its visual impact. Known as a trophée in French these pieces were generally mounted above doors or at the top of a trumeau mirror. Please look at this carved wooden piece closely to see its inclusion of strings, percussion and wind instruments as well as a book of music. There are even Pan pipes in the lower left and right corner referring to the earliest musical instruments famous from Greek classicism. And just in the middle is a tuning fork. Surmounting the top are two tented structures with draped panels adorned with tassels in an exotic manner. Found in a barn in Normandy beneath a pile of junk this intriguing example of allegorical motifs evokes a wonderful feeling of musical France.
