Luxury Design, Past & Present
A pair of unique vintage French gilded metal chairs circa 1940 in the neoclassical taste. These chairs have a strong architectural presence to them because of the square tubular construction joined by slender rods. Please enlarge the photographs to see the intriguing manner in which the slender rods meet in the centre of the back as well as between the four legs in a knot design on these vintage French chairs. Notice how the slender metal rods are attached by a horizontal band around each of the legs in the way a knotted would be used. The chair backs are actually curved to add to the comfort along with the padded seat. The open quality of the chairs lends them a light appearance and the hollow tubular construction means they are light in weight as well. The original gilded finish has mellowed and achieved a lovely burnished effect. Because these chairs are able to be seen from any direction they are perfect for use wherever seating that does not block the view is needed.
