Luxury Design, Past & Present
A British oil on canvas landscape in the manner of, and possibly by, Sidney Richard Percy, (1821-1886), an English painter who specialized in dramatic British highland landscapes. Percy, né Williams, came from a successful family of painters, and he began to use the surname Percy around 1841 to differentiate himself from other members of his family, becoming, himself, the most successful of the Williamses. Percy’s use of light is quite distinctive throughout his works; atmospheric yet conveyed with a striking lucidity. A sense of vast space, along with an absolute mastery of rocky mountain forms and surfaces are consistent throughout his oeuvre. This unsigned landscape dates probably to the third quarter of the 19th century, and features among the imposing landscape elements, a figure in Scottish dress fishing at the lower right hand corner. Very good later gilt frame.
