Portuguese Rococo Carved and Gilded Settee, 18th Century - image 1 of 10

A spectacular and rare Portuguese Rococo settee in very sturdy and exceptionally good condition, the uniquely curved forms embellished with low relief carved motifs typical of Portuguese furniture of the era: asymmetric cartouches spilling over with foliage and tendrils. Each cabriole leg terminates in a modified ball and claw foot. The surface is gilded with silver gilt details around each opening of the back and highlighting other carved elements. The back side of the settee has later paint and glaze which complements the gilding on the front side. Striped taffeta upholstery with light wear, especially to the arms. Structurally sound, no evidence of any structural repairs, reinforced underneath with additional 20th century corner blocks. Attractive patina and wear to the gilded surfaces, with some stable chipping and associated inpainting, overall a very lovely antique finish.
