Still life of apples, framed in original Directoire period giltwood frame.
Arguably the greatest French flower painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Berjon was born in St Pierre de Vaise, near Lyon, working originally as a fabric designer in Lyon’s important textiles industry. He exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1791, and, during his 17 year residence in Paris, he exhibited in the Salon at least five times. He returned to Lyon in 1810 and taught painting in the Lyonnais Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and continued to paint throughout his long life. He died in Lyon in 1843 at age 89.
