A Fine Pair of Armchairs in the Neo-classical manner of Robert Adam

Constructed in mahogany with hand-painted gilt accents and red leather, each with oval backs enclosed with interlocking dart and braid carved design, with outswept arms curving into the front legs; with fluted serpentine front and side rails meeting at carved rosettes on the front corners, raised on fluted and foliate front legs terminating at topie feet and shaped back legs.
English, Circa 1870

A similar set of armchairs are pictured in the dining room at Syon House in the 1920s, which was decorated by Robert Adam between 1762-1769. The Victoria and Albert Museum also have in their collection a set of chairs of comparable design, which are described as exemplifying the 'Adam' style and similar to the designs by furniture maker, John Linnell.
