The Macchiaioli were an influential group of Italian painters working in Tuscany in the second half of the nineteenth century. Often compared with the French Impressionists, their work concentrated on colour, light and shade and was usually painted outdoors (plein-air). In this they were revolutionary for their time, breaking away from the prevailing schools of Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Mostly reviled in their lifetimes and living in poverty ("Macchiaioli" was initially a pejorative term) their work only came to prominence at the end of the nineteenth century.
CONDITION: This painting has been examined in detail under ultraviolet (black) light. There is a small retouched repair to the upper right corner of the canvas but it is otherwise in very good, clean and ready to hang condition.
