BIOGRAPHY: Peter Max was born Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin, Germany on October 19, 1937. His family traveled frequently, from China to Tibet, Africa, Israel and Europe before finally settling in the United States. His artistic education was in New York at the Art Student's League, the Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts.
Acclaimed for his "Cosmic '60's" style, Max is recognized as not only a visionary pop artist but also a master of dynamic neo-Expressionism. He is particularly famous for his paintings of Lady Liberty and the American Flag. He has painted for six US Presidents and his art is exhibited at Presidential Libraries and U.S. Embassies and has received numerous commissions, including to create the first "Preserve the Environment" Postage Stamp, 235 Border Murals at entry points to Canada and Mexico, a painting of each of 50 U.S. states and six Liberty portraits at the White House. His work has been exhibited in numerous museums and exhibitions worldwide.
